The county and Concise Systems LLC disclaim any warranties regarding the accuracy of the data and are not liable for special, incidental, or consequential damages from its use.
One important timing note: transfers, wills, plats, and other instruments recorded at the Surry County Courthouse after January 1st of each year will not be updated in the online real estate records until the following year. Commissioner of the Revenue
The Surry County Commissioner of the Revenue is elected by citizens every four years and serves as the chief assessing office for the county. The Commissioner is responsible for the assessment of all real estate, maintaining and retaining accurate property records, and working with the reassessment firm during general real estate reassessments.
Beyond real estate, the Commissioner prepares the personal property tax book and provides assessments on all vehicles, boats, mobile homes, trailers, tangible business property, and other taxable personal property. The office also verifies vehicle qualification under the Personal Property Tax Relief Act and assists residents with state income tax preparation.
The Commissioner's full mission statement covers updating real estate records for deed transfers, splits, and new construction, and assisting with general real estate reassessments. Contact the Commissioner of the Revenue at 757-294-5225. The office page is at surrycountyva.gov/153/Commissioner-of-the-Revenue. Tax relief programs for elderly and disabled residents and for qualified veterans are administered through this office.

Real Estate Tax Rates and Billing
The real estate tax rate in Surry County is set each year by the Board of Supervisors. Surry County does not prorate real estate taxes except for new dwellings when substantially completed. Real estate is taxed in the name of the owner as of January 1 each year. This means if you buy a property after January 1, the prior owner's name remains on the tax roll for that tax year.
Surry County assesses real estate on a periodic basis. Assessments are contracted out to an independent contractor rather than performed entirely in-house. Property owners whose assessment changes receive a mailed notice listing the dates of the reassessment hearings. Following those hearings, the Board of Equalization convenes to handle any remaining appeals.
For current tax rate information and payment details, visit the Surry County Real Estate page. Real estate data is also available through the county's ConciseCAMA portal. The county government portal at surrycountyva.gov/27/Government provides links to GIS, real estate data, and FOIA request procedures.
The Real Estate page shown above explains Surry County's tax rate setting process, proration rules, assessment contracting approach, and how property owners are notified of reassessment changes.
Circuit Court Clerk and Deed Records
The Surry County Circuit Court Clerk's Office holds all recorded land instruments for the county. Deeds, deeds of trust, plats, liens, judgments, and other documents that affect real property title are filed and indexed here. Virginia's Title 55.1 governs recording requirements, and only instruments that meet those requirements can be accepted for recording.
To research a property's ownership history or check for encumbrances, the Clerk's Office is the right starting point. Records can be searched in person at the Surry County Courthouse. Certified copies of recorded documents are available for fees established by state law. If you need a copy of a specific deed or plat, come with as much identifying information as possible, including the grantor and grantee names and approximate recording date or book and page number if you have them.
The Clerk's Office also handles probate records, estate administration, civil and criminal court filings, and marriage licenses. These estate records can be important for real property research when ownership transferred through a deceased person's estate rather than a direct deed transfer.

Under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), which is codified at Section 2.2-3700 of the Code of Virginia, citizens have the right to inspect or receive copies of public records, or both. This includes property records held by county offices. FOIA requests can be made to the county administrator's office in writing, in person, or electronically.
Real estate data is available online through the county's ConciseCAMA portal. For the most up-to-date ownership and assessment information, especially for recent transactions, contact the Commissioner of the Revenue directly at (757) 294-5225 rather than relying solely on the online portal, which has a one-year lag for newly recorded instruments.
