Circuit Court Land Records

Roanoke County's Circuit Court Clerk's office holds records pertaining to actions or filings in the jurisdiction of that Circuit Court. Each Circuit Court Clerk's Office in Virginia holds only those records pertaining to its own jurisdiction.

Effective January 2023, you can view indexes via Circuit Court Secure Remote Access (SRA) to Land Records. SRA allows subscribers to search the deed index online without visiting the courthouse. Fees for SRA access are set by the Clerk's office.

Effective January 1, 2020, the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Department of Taxation require the tax map number to be in the following format for Roanoke County: 000.00-00-00.00-0000. This number must be correct on both the document and the coversheet. If it is not correct on both, the document will be rejected.

This format requirement applies to documents recorded on the Deed Desk that require a tax map number. Make sure your tax map number is in the correct format before submitting any deed or deed of trust for recording. The Clerk's office staff can confirm the correct number for your parcel.

Effective December 1, 2019, if you need your document returned to you immediately after recordation (and it is not a multi-jurisdictional document or a power of attorney), the office will collect the per-page copy fee to do so. Documents submitted for recording must not have changes made to them after preparation. Faxed or emailed changes printed in-house are not accepted, and a runner cannot make changes to documents at the counter.

For personal property, the county assesses all vehicles registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles and garaged in Roanoke County as of January 1 of each year. The vehicle license fee (VLF) applies to every motor vehicle, trailer, and semitrailer garaged in the county. After 30 days, you must report the disposal to DMV before calling the office or using the online filing system.
